Our approach to clothing needs to change. Nearly 50% of unwanted textiles end up in UK landfill (85% worldwide). When we look to buy clothes, we are surrounded by fast fashion & budget retailers (H&M, Zara, Shein, Temu etc etc). It has become so easy to buy a cheap garment, wear it once, then throw it out. But this industry is the second biggest consumer of water, produces 92 million tonnes of waste per year & is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions (more than international flights & maritime shipping combined) This trend is damaging our attitude to clothing and damaging our planet So let's Mend the Trend! Join Learn & Create for a year-long project, sharing skills to cut clothes waste. Learn how to make simple repairs and alterations, discover creative mending skills or learn how to construct new projects using old clothing This project is supported by the Highland Council Reuse & Repair Fund. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MEND THE TREND ACADEMY - a selection of courses and workshops teaching upcycling and sewing skills to help reinvent new clothing. These workshops will be 4hrs and will cover a range of techniques using machine and hand sewing techniques, as well as no-sew methods. These sessions are ideal for beginners - those with little or no sewing experience. In the workshops we will cover - How to alter hems - How to sew on a button - Various ways to patch holes in clothing or fabric - Basic alterations The workshop content is flexible - we will discuss in advance any ideas or techniques you wish to cover. Students are welcome to bring clothing to repair/alter or can just practice the techniques These sessions are fully funded by the Highland Council Reuse & Repair Fund.
